Kumiko craftsmanship could be made of basswood or cypress, and the frame, the box and the cabinet can be made of cypress, cherry wood, black walnut, white oak, maple and other materials.
Large Kumiko craftsmanship, measuring 190cm*65cm,has 15,623 grooves, 7636 parts, 530 meters of wooden strips, 13 types of patterns, 8 types of wood, 3cm spacing,and took 32 days(about 384 hours) to complete. It is the most difficult work ever made outside of Japan in the world.
It uses 13 textures such as hemp leaf, sesame,sakura and so on.
It uses 8 types wood materials such as basswood,Phoebe zhennan S. Lee, sandalwood, Japanese cypress, cherry wood, sapele, and black walnut and so on.
Kumiko craftsmanship is done by hand only to open the mortise and tenon to complete all the pattern splicing, seemingly simple, but the size of the material, precision requirements are very high. The craftsman needs to have patience and determination.
Kumiko craftsmanship originated in Japan during the Hitori period (592-710 A.D.) and has evolved to be used in architecture, doors, screens and Japanese artifacts.
After hundreds of years of development, the group has evolved more than two hundred patterns, which can be found everywhere in life. These patterns also contain many beautiful symbolic meanings, such as the sakura panttern which is the national flower of Japan and the benne pattern which means health
