As a carbon sequestration material, wood is a very good choice. Forests are actually a very good source of carbon sinks or a way to reduce carbon emissions. But sometimes people forget that apart from the forest, when the forest wood is cut into final products, whether it is a door made of wooden boards, or a board, floor, or furniture, it is still a carbon sink. What AHEC has been doing is telling everyone that not only the living tree can be a carbon sink, but also that forest wood can still be an important channel for carbon sinks after being cut down and turned into a product. Using wood as a raw material has the function of carbon sink in the whole life cycle of production and transportation, and the carbon footprint and carbon impact are very small.
If we want to build a reinforced concrete building, the first step is to lay the foundation. The foundation is often dug very deep, and a lot of soil needs to be dug up, and a large number of excavators, trucks, etc. are required, and these all increase carbon emissions and reduce pollution. environmental impact. But if it is a wooden structure, there is no need to lay a foundation, and a small and simple foundation can be built directly on the ground to start building upwards. Moreover, the materials of wooden structures can be prefabricated. First, they are prefabricated in the factory according to a certain size, and then transported directly to the construction site. It can be built in a very short time on the construction site. In the process, fewer trucks will be used on construction sites, with a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions. Today, AHEC already has cross-laminated timber technology, which can be applied to hardwood or softwood, which enables us to achieve faster and more stable results when we do wood construction.
Therefore, Mr. Michael Snow, executive director of the American Hardwood Export Council, said that compared with other materials such as reinforced concrete, wood-framed buildings have many advantages. A large amount of carbon sinks can be stored in the life cycle. If we can use more wooden buildings, it can store more and more carbon sinks, and it is a long-term carbon sink.
In recent years, we can see that more and more designers have begun to design with wood as raw materials. AHEC will also cooperate with some young and talented designers. Because sometimes the product we design has a relatively short lifespan. At the same time, AHEC will do some large-scale projects in Europe, such as the Smile project and the Multiply project. These projects can promote the application of hardwood CLT.
