The wildfires have not only exacerbated Canada's drought, they have also taken a toll on the country's lumber industry.
A lumber expert at Corton Capital said that in the longer term, supplies will be reduced, especially in just four provinces where wildfires have consumed more than 10 million acres of forest.
John Ducanson said: “It affects everything, the pulp mill, the plywood mill, anything that consumes wood. You can’t run a sawmill or a pulp mill unless someone works in it. When they were evacuated, most of the employees were working at the local factory and they had to close the factory. It was going to have a very significant impact.”
He fears the fires will shut some of the larger factories and eventually affect exports to the United States, Canada's largest lumber market.
