Until recently, US hard maple veneer could be exported to the EU as long as it was certified kiln dried to satisfy concerns about streak disease (Davidsoniella virescens). The European Union recently changed this rule to require "areas of maple logs and sliced veneers to be free from the disease," reports the Decorative Hardwood Association.
The result: maple logs originating in New York, Vermont, Michigan, Wisconsin and North Carolina, and veneer produced from these logs, cannot be certified for shipment to the EU.
