Tree traits and origin: Deciduous trees, up to 20m, DBH up to 40cm. Mainly produced in Southwest my country and South China; also produced in Southeast Asia.
Material properties and uses
Macroscopic features: The heartwood and sapwood are distinct, the heartwood is brown or dark brown, and the sapwood is yellowish brown. Growth rings inconspicuous; diffuse-porous wood. The axial parenchyma is broad-banded near the canal. The wood has a straight grain and a fine structure.
Microscopic features: single tube hole and a few 2-3 diameter multiple tube holes. Vessel molecules, parenchyma, wood fibers and wood rays are superimposed. The duct molecule is single perforated, and the pits are alternately arranged between the ducts. Broadband parenchyma with 2-6 cells adjacent to the tube; the parenchyma contains rhombic crystals, and the compartments contain more than 40 crystal cells. Single-column rays are few; multicolumn rays are 2-3 cells wide and 5-10 cells high. The ray tissue is of the same shape as single row and multiple rows, rare and irregular type III. Ray cells are rich in gums.
Uses: Air-dry density 0.64-0.78g/cm3. Medium strength, high hardness. The heartwood is resistant to corrosion and ants, but the sapwood tends to turn blue. The cutting is difficult, and the cut surface is smooth; the deep and shallow parabola patterns on the chord section are beautiful. After painting, the gloss is good and the adhesiveness is very good. It is suitable for high-end furniture, sculpture, ship skeleton materials and decorative materials.
