According to the east Russia website recently news, the Far East Development Ministry announced: the government denied the establishment of the far East unified state-owned timber export group proposal, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Abramutchenko opposed.
In an interview, Far East Development Minister Sergei Chekunkov explained that the ban on the export of logs from the Far East from 1 January 2022 is a heavy topic.
In 2020, the Far East exported 4.7 million cubic meters of logs, valued at $1 billion. The industry employed 8,500 people, 30,000 including their families.
Many of them live in townships, where there are few jobs, and the ban on exporting logs is a challenge. The federal and local governments will study how to keep their workers employed.
Now the government is studying expanding sawn timber production capacity and developing a mechanism to transport timber from the Far East to Siberia, but this is costly.
In June, deputy Prime Minister Andrei Trutnev announced at a meeting in Khaba the need to create a state-owned log export monopoly, saying he had a presidential mandate and was discussing the matter with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
